It's good to have friend's. It's even better to have friend's that will let you use their farm for your senior photography session! As you have probably already figured out, that was the case this past weekend here in Lexington. I met Laura for her senior session on a beautiful farm high atop Fayette County. The setting was indeed perfect and we took advantage of several locations around the property for her photos. A few hours and clothing changes later and we were finished just before sunset. It was perfect timing and a nice way to end a beautiful evening. I picked a few of my favorites to share here on my blog.

There's a popular saying that if at first you don't succeed, try try again. That could easily describe this session as we had been planning since May but just could not seem to get together until this week. Of course there's another saying that good things are worth the wait. That was certainly true as I worked with them on a few family photos, grabbed some shots of their son, and met their dog with the greatest name ever - Diesel. It turned out to be a great session with a nice family on a beautiful day. All things said, it worked out perfectly as things usually seem to do. I enjoy all my senior photo sessions. It has quickly become one of my favorite types of session actually. There's something about hanging around with teens that have their entire future ahead of them that is quite fascinating to me. They are full of energy, the anticipation of their future, nervous about the transition to college, young at heart, and just a lot of fun to be around. I think it helps me feel young and that never hurts anyone!
This was definitely the case Sunday with Emily, a senior at Henry Clay High School here in Lexington, Ky. She wanted to mix things up for her session so we decided to start with a traditional look and setting. We worked that look for about an hour before heading heading downtown to a warehouse district to finish her session with an edgy, urban flair. Add in a few wardrobe changes and a make up session with Jennifer Banks Makeup and everything came together perfectly. I know that I had a great time and I think Emily did as well! I received a call a few weeks ago from a bride looking for a few hours of coverage for a small intimate wedding at Troy Presbyterian Church located just outside of Versailles, Ky. She was in Texas, her groom was from France, his mom was flying in for the wedding, and they would be joined by closest friends and family. All arrangements were made via phone and email and the first time I actually saw the bride and groom was when the ceremony began. The first time we said hello was after they walked down the aisle together as a married couple.
I have to be honest, I was not sure what to expect that day when I left the house. I imagined a lot that could go wrong as I usually operate with a list of plans, photo requests, and a comfortable sense of what to expect during the wedding. I was shooting my first wedding "on the fly" as a true photojournalist style.
So, now that it's over, I have to admit that it was great! The wedding was intimate, bride and groom beautiful, and the reception that followed at her childhood home was elegant. I enjoyed shooting without any specific expectations other than to capture the moments of the next three hours. Any time people dress and gather for a wedding there are going to be some photos that they want together and that worked out well also. All being said, I had a great time. They were terrific to work with, I learned a bit of French culture, met some great people in the small setting, and now look back with a smile on my face as I reflect on the experience.

Downtown Lexington was the place to be this weekend, at least for me. I had two senior sessions on Sunday and both were in various locations near the center of the city. If you told me I could only pick one area of Lexington to use for photography, this would be that location.
All that being said, that's exactly where we shot this senior session. Julia was my last session of the day and the timing was perfect with the evening glow prior to the setting of the sun. We spent a couple of hours on two different locations starting at Ashland before heading deeper into the city to finish.
I do need to credit Jennifer Banks Makeup for the fantastic job she did on location prior to the session. The link will take you to her Facebook page and you can contact her at [email protected]. I am looking forward to working with her again this coming weekend as well!
